Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most prominent researchers in affordable housing and homelessness, Nick Falvo has a PhD in Public Policy.

His decade-long experience working on the front line with persons experiencing homelessness provides him with a deep understanding of the ‘on the ground’ factors that influence a lack of affordable housing and homelessness. His extensive research of the macroeconomic and public policy factors that intersect with those phenomena inform his analysis, and, combined with his unique capacity to ‘cut through the jargon,’ makes his work accessible to academia and the public at large.

While at Carleton University, Nick developed and taught one of Canada’s only university-level courses on affordable housing and homelessness. He also led two research projects in Canada’s North.

From 2015 until 2019, Nick worked as Director of Research and Data at the Calgary Homeless Foundation.

Fluently bilingual, Nick possesses a deep understanding of international, national, provincial/territorial and municipal contexts. He further comprehends the impact of economic and social policy, demographic trends, the labour market, income assistance and the housing market on homeless-serving systems.

He is Editor-in-Chief, North America, of the International Journal on Homelessness, and is the 2021 winner of the President’s Medal for Outstanding Housing Research — the highest honour given by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Finally, Nick’s clear and concise communication style places him in a unique position to provide sound advice with a wide-ranging perspective.
